Isthmus Peak is a demanding but very beautiful track that many people call the equivalent of the popular Roys Peak. It sits not far from Wanaka, and from it you get views of two lakes at once, Wanaka and Hāwea. A physically hard and long route with a lot of elevation gain, but the views are worth it.

GETTING THERE

The track is 20 to 30 minutes from Wanaka, on State Highway 6, which runs towards the west coast. In Google the spot comes up as Isthmus Peak Trail Small Parking, and the car park really is small. There is a second one slightly further south, marked as Isthmus Peak Track Parking, but it is just as small. Both are free with no time limit.

We walked it in winter, out of season, and when we arrived at eleven in the morning almost everything was taken. In summer there may be even fewer spaces, though you can pull over on the verge if you need to. The track itself starts on the other side of the highway, and the traffic here is fairly heavy. So look both ways carefully when you cross.
